The birds and the bees

I've had a couple people ask me lately, "how are your bees are doing?"

One word...GREAT!

They are bursting out of their hives! Literally! One of my hives swarmed last week
(some of the bees packed up and left) 

This is not a good thing...

I was actually thinking about dividing that hive the day before they flew the coop, because it was so full. But, decided to add supers (honey boxes) instead.

The good news is I was able to catch the swarm and I started a new hive with them. I wish I got pictures, but I had my hands full. It being the first time I've caught a swarm of bees, I was a little nervous about the whole thing (to say the least) But it was really exciting and a little scary too. I wasn't worried about getting stung, I had my bee suit on...but from what I was reading, once you have a hold of the branch and you cut it. They say the bees will be heaver than you think they will be. I just DID NOT want to drop them. 

Everything went smoothly and they are enjoying their new home (hive) with extra elbow room.

It's all so exciting!

The lavender bee box in the video above is the one that swarmed. There are still soooo many bees in that box, it's crazy!

It was bound to happen...

This year Yosemite decided to make it mandatory to have a permit (7 days a week) to hike Halfdome. 

Last year (when we hiked it) you only had to have a permit if you hiked it on Friday, Saturday or Sunday (the busiest days)

So when my sister said she really wanted to hike Halfdome this year with us, we've been trying to get permits, but no luck. Permits are only $1.50 each with a limit of 4. But getting your hands on them is difficult, they sell out FAST! There is a note on Yosemite's website that says-

NOTE: This hiking permit is transferable, but cannot b e resold or auctioned.
Resale of this permit is a violation of Title 36, Code of Federal Regulations, section 1.6. You are allowed to give this permit to anyone else, but each permit can only be used once.

But we are starting to find permits being auctioned on ebay and on Craigslist for more than $100 per permit.

I wish Yosemite would go back to the way it was last year...

On a brighter note, something fun is happening here (right here) this Thursday (April 21st)

Finally

The weather is finally turning Spring like here...
It's starting to dry out with the weather warming up to the mid seventies this week. Yes, mid seventies!

Spring is here!

Yesterday I checked on my bees (it's been about a month due to the weather) Everything looks great...the bees made it through Winter just fine and it looks like I'll be getting lots of honey this year. The first year of beekeeping you must leave all the honey in the hives for the bees. It's all so exciting!

It's like camping

Happy Happy Friday!

You don't realize how much you'll miss something until it's gone.
Like electricity!
This last week it's been kind of like camping (in the snow) here in our little town of 13,000.
Keeping warm by the campfire (in our case a wood stove)
Cooking on an open fire (the BBQ or warming soup on the wood stove)
Sleeping was much nicer though, no sleeping on the hard ground in sleeping bags.

Most of the snow is gone now (little patches here & there) so this weekend we'll start clearing the down trees on our property , including the one that made it's way into the pool.
We are not out of the woods yet though, weather wise. Tonight & tomorrows forecast is more rain & snow. But for now, I'm just doing the happy dance that we have power once again!

Snowed in

Our little town was hit by a snow storm.
Knocking out power to 13,000 of us (the whole town)
There are downed trees everywhere...
They even have closed Yosemite.
They are starting to bring back power very slowly. Starting with town first.

I'm at Starbucks right now, which was one of the first places to get power.
We were trapped at our house all day yesterday with a down power pole on one side and a down tree on the other.
The neighborhood got together and moved the power pole (with our cars) so we could get into town to get gas for everyone who have generators (luckily we have a small one)
They are saying it maybe a week or more before our neighborhood gets power as we lost the main power pole that goes into our neighborhood.
We lost lots of trees here, one even fell into our pool. But we thankful that there was no damage to our house.
Unfortunately we are lined up for 2 -3 more storms to come through our area starting tonight with low snow levels again.
Let's hope the forecast is wrong, and we have sunny skies and 70 degree days ahead. We could use it here...

Off to Market

I was commissioned to make a bracelet in memory of her father who grew and sold his fruits and veggies at his local Farmer's Market. Although he grew a wide variety of veggies, he was known for his hot peppers.
I was honored she asked me to make something so special...

You guys have asked...and I aim to please.
So starting today I will be taking orders on some of my more popular styles of beads (at a special price) on my new "TO ORDER" bead page.
I will be changing the selection of beads I offer from time to time, so no one gets bored.

I will also continue offering beads (when ready) on my "READY NOW" bead page.

Because I plan on keeping busy filling orders, I have decided to put March's Design of the Month on hold. But I don't think you guys will mind to much as I have lots of fun beads you can still order.
